Key Points to Remember
- Get the agency case number. After the crash, the officer should give you an accident report number called an agency case number. If they don't, ask for it.
- Know which agency responded. In Georgia, your report could come from local police, the sheriff's office, or the state patrol.
- Give it a few days. Reports aren't instant. They're usually ready within about three to five business days.
- Download it on BuyCrash. Most police departments use BuyCrash, where you can find the report using your case number, name, or crash date.
- No BuyCrash? Use open records. Request it through the police department's open records office, or go to the department in person and ask for a copy.
- Expect a small fee, typically between $5 and $25.

So you've been in a wreck. And now you're being told you need a police report. But how do you actually get it?
After the crash, the officer should give you an accident report number called an agency case number. If they don't, make sure you ask for it. In Georgia, your report could come from local police, the sheriff's office, or the state patrol.
You'll need to know which agency responded. Reports aren't instant. They're usually ready within about three to five business days.
Once it's ready, you can find your report online or pick it up in person from the agency. Most police departments use an online system called BuyCrash, where you can download the report using your case number, name, or crash date. If they don't use BuyCrash, you can Google the police department's open records department and request it there.
If you can't find it online, you can also go to the department in person and request a copy directly. There's usually a small fee, typically between $5 and $25. Your report includes key details like driver information, insurance coverage, and the officer's summary of the crash.
In a crash, call Morrison & Hughes, 404-LAW-TEAM. We don't back down.
